Originally developed as an oral medication for treating high blood pressure, it was discovered to have the side effect of promoting hair growth. Due to this side effect, it was later formulated into a topical solution for treating male and female pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia).

Minoxidil works by widening the blood vessels, increasing blood flow to the hair follicles, and stimulating hair growth.

It is believed to prolong the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle and increase the size of hair follicles, leading to thicker hair strands.

While minoxidil can be effective in promoting hair growth, it’s important to note that results vary from person to person, and it may not work for everyone. Additionally, continuous use is typically required to maintain any hair regrowth achieved, as stopping treatment can lead to the gradual loss of newly grown hair.

As with any medication, it’s essential to follow the instructions provided by a healthcare professional when using minoxidil.
